Fabric…..my vice

There are 1000’s, 10’s of 1000’s of them. Every colorway, composition, width, price, feel, drape……….it is a dream.

Hunting for some new fabrics for upcoming projects and came across these fabulous finds. There are fabrics out there that I have used for drapes, pillows, bedding and shades that are labelled as quilting or dress fabric. Remember they usually are not as wide as the standard 54-60″ home fabrics. The upside is they tend to be very economical and a big bang for your buck.

Pretty pretty. Some of the quilting fabrics are soooooo soft and 8.95, 11.95, 13.95 a yard. Some are available in cotton/linen blend and 54″ w. Totally under utilized!

When putting some ideas together, think of a jumping off point. Something that pops into your head, nothing you have to labour about. For some it could be the color you want-soft blue or grass green….it might be a deep red. It could be a piece of furniture-say a chair you cannot live without or a lamp that made it into your car before you could click your heels together. For me it usually starts with a piece of fabric.

Then I build.

Whatever the room, whatever the function….. build it and they will come. Have literally started with a tiny scrap of incredible damask fabric from a client she found in some side street in Paris. She could not remember where she got it, or when…..only that one the settee’s she had, was to be covered in it. The fabric house was located, fabric was made and the settee……undeniable.

Surround yourself with bits you love. They do not have to cost a fortune, though some will. Some food for thought:

-Get a 50 yr sofa, reupholster it over and over

-Use lamps, down-lighting is much more attractive and we all look better (your mother in law will thank me)

-Have your girl put a double hem in the drapes-take them out….take them in

-Try not to create an off-limits room, we want love not a room that gets dusted.

Send me a swatch of your favourite fabric.

Love you.

  1. I love the fact that you emphasize the point that a tiny piece of fabric can be the “inspiration” on which to decorate an entire room. I speak to my clients a lot about finding something that makes them happy when they see it and build upon that when designing a space. Also, couldn’t agree more that a house needs to be a “home” and lived in!!!
