We all rock it

Funny thing, I have literally had people say to me that I can never come over to their house. While I would normally think that odd, I get it. Just like we all brush, floss and descale our teeth before going to see the dentist or clean the house before the house-keeper comes, you do not want me to see your things.

1st off, my own house is near disaster. It is truly the cobblers kids go barefoot. Have me over, I am not going to make fun of you, I don’t care if you still have furniture from college.

Literally had clients that all they have is a mattress set. They spend no time at their condo, house or apt. It is the best feeling to see their faces after the “Ta-da” moment, after choosing, spending and of course when the decision is made….let’s get it done yesterday. Months later you cannot get them to go to work or anyone else’s house for dinner. They want to be home. MIssion accomplished.

One of the things I like to ask my clients to do is get one thing for the house when they travel. My personal fav is getting a rug from over seas. This is always a hoot trying to get it home. Some places will ship for you, though I have brought them home on the plane. One time an 8 x 10 got folded, tripled bagged in contractor bags (I always travel with them-weird, I know…you just never know) with a label on it. The rug, looking like, I don’t know what went under the plane….paid over-size luggage and that was that.

There are so many incredible rugs out there these days that are so much more accessible (price and availability). Many companies have weavers that will make you a rug-we had one made for a client from a fabric swatch she loved. Ask for a strike off-you will pay for this and it will add time to the rug, though totally worth it.

Some beauties:

They do not have to cost a fortune, again work with your budget. If you can though, like a good sofa, get wool. It cleans nicely and will hold up over time. Shop around, if you are in the market for something a little more contemporary-go Tibetan or Nepalese, they make unbelievable carpets. Again shop around, if you head into a place that specializes in them, they will have a selection and you can negotiate and find things on sale. I found an incredible 8 x 10 needlepoint rug at a shop in Chicago for less than 500.00. Still have it and somehow it has survived all sorts of kid crimes. Look online and very very important…get a rug pad. The non-slip ones are for that…no slip. A rug needs some cushion to keep it for the ages. Just like your clothes, it needs a cleaning and a daily/weekly vacuum (not a lot, though depending on your family, call a good rug cleaner to ask). The fibers-in clothes, fabrics (the ones on chairs/sofas/pillows, etc) and carpets need to be cleaned or they will disintegrate and never be clean. Dirt destroys.

Good news! We have a winner for the room to decorate. She sent me lots of photos and we have started the talk about what she wants and does not want. More to come on that.

Whatever your taste, what you love to live with…..we all rock it the way we do.

Love you.
